The candles
Hand rolled cones of unbleached cotton stiffened with natural beeswax, about 25cm long, with a printed line showing where to stop burning. Assorted colours, from sky blue through to white, and assorted fragrances from vanilla to rose. Colours vary a little between batches, so a pack is a mixture.
What ear candling is
The narrow end of the cone rests at the opening of the ear, the far end is lit, and it burns for eight to ten minutes down to the printed line. What people come back for is the experience: lying still, the warmth, the soft crackling. That is what this kit is for.
It does not remove ear wax. The residue inside a burnt cone is wax and ash from the candle itself. This page used to say otherwise, and used to have sections headed tinnitus and hearing problems. Those claims are not supported and they are gone.
Doing it safely
Two people, every time. One lies down, the other holds the candle, lights it and watches it. Always fit a protective disc. Keep water within reach. Stop at the printed line and put the candle straight into the water. Stop immediately if anything feels hot or sharp.
Adults only. Not for children, and not for anyone with grommets, a perforated eardrum, an ear infection, discharge, ear pain, an ear injury, hearing loss or recent ear surgery. Audiology bodies generally advise against ear candling, and you should know that before you buy.
